Gnome Nativity
Handmake your holiday decor Using the Gnome Nativity Crochet Pattern
This little Gnome Nativity Crochet Pattern is the perfect choice for decorating with kids. The number one stress about nativities is that children absolutely love to play with them, but most can break. This Nativity set is not only adorable, but very durable and really allows children to be hands on, getting into the Christmas Spirit.
About 5 years ago I started an Etsy shop I had been working as a substitute teacher and had morning sickness to the max. I started thinking about things I could sell that would potentially enable me to work from home where I could throw up in peace.
At the time Gnomes were huge! They were super popular. So I told myself that I would make one Gnome Nativity set and post it and see if it sold. There was no harm in just throwing it out there right? So I listed it... and nothing happened for months. Probably about 3 months after I listed it, it sold. So I decided to make 3 more. a few days later they all sold. So I made 5 Gnome Nativity sets, and that day they all sold!
Every time I made more, they would sell. That Christmas season I sold 5k in Gnomes which was absolutely surreal.
The next year I decided I would make some gnomes for other holidays, as well as more nativities for Christmas. That Christmas season I made 15k selling Gnomes... I was baffled. Fast forward a few months and I was feeling super excited to make some new products, but then life happens. We moved across the country, were expecting our third baby, and decided to leave the job we had moved for. Sewing for hours just was no longer possible and I had a choice to make. Do I keep making Gnomes for hours a day and hopefully grow my business? Or do I drop it, focus on my littles and my pregnancy health, and maybe pick gnomes back up someday?
For me that was a no brainer, I chose the latter. I am so glad that I did. Fast forward a few years, my Gnome Sewing Patterns had been selling on and off. I had picked up crochet just after my first baby and had fallen in love with it.
I decided that I was going to start up my Etsy shop again! With 5 kids now our oldest being 6, I no longer had the space or time to sew hundreds of gnomes. I found though that many people were interested in making their own products. I decided to Design crochet patterns, because I could work on them at my own pace, and release them as they were ready. I have now been designing crochet patterns for several years, and I am so excited to share them with you. One of the first patterns I designed was the famous "Gnome Nativity". I am still working on adding some animals to the mix, but I have a very beautiful "Holy Family" version available as a printable on my Etsy Shop, and this free version on my blog for all of you.

Finish Joseph
Fold the hat over lap up stitch the beard under the overlap of the hat in the seam right where the hat changes to the body.
Then stitch the nose to the center of the beard at the top middle of the beard right under the hat overlap as well. Fold the hat brim over the top of the nose and cover the beard seam.
Finish Mary
To make Mary’s braid cut out 9 lengths of yarn that are twice the gnomes height. Bind them together on one side with a little scrap of yarn tied into a bow. Then loosely braid the yarn with 3 pieces in each section. Then bind the other side with another scrap bow. Center the braid in the middle and stitch it to the gnome where the hat meets the body, making sure that the hat is folded up out of the way. You can make your braids longer or shorter if you want, I like to have them just at the edge of the body. (See photos) Finally we stitch on the nose, see Joseph pictures above for reference.
